Abstract

Mobile news experience is conceptualized in this study as a socially constructed process of experiencing news in an integrative and interactive fashion in a mobile environment. To enhance mobile news experience, 23 mobile features can be identified on a home page while 25 on a story page in a news app. How important are these enhancers in the eyes of mobile news? To what extent are they actually used in a news app? How large is the gap between perceived importance and actual usage? To address these three research questions, the investigator conducted a Web-based survey of mobile users and a comparative feature analysis of news apps. The survey measured perceived importance of mobile experience enhancers while the comparative feature analysis measured their actual usage in news apps. And a gap was located by comparing perceived importance of mobile news experience enhancers and their actual usage in news apps. The results of the survey and the app analysis showed a huge gap between perceived importance and actual usage of mobile experience enhancers on the home page. And on the story page, an even wider gap was located between perceived importance and actual usage. To enhance mobile news experience, the investigator made recommendations to mobile news providers. Suggestions were made by the researcher to provide directions and dimensions for further studies.
