This paper is part of the panel “Using and not using ICTs”. In 2012 the representative survey JAMES has been conducted for the second time in the German, French and Italian parts of Switzerland. Over 1.000 young people aged 12 to 19 have been asked about their media habits and non-medial leisure activities. By using factor- and clusteranalysis five types of media use have been identified,, the entertainment oriented media use, the information oriented media use, the computer nerds, the music enthusiasts and the analog media users. These media use types are connected with different patterns of heavy or temperate use of ICT/Social web tools and they are integrated in different backgrounds of socio-demographic variables. Internet and computer use and mobile communication of the five types lead to different forms of risks and opportunities in the everyday life of the adolescents. Media education in families and schools should therefore use adjusted approaches to enhance media literacy and a safe use of ICTs.
